The Shek Wai Kok Estate Food Centre in collaboration with the Agency for Volunteer Service under the "Miracle Summer" initiative, successfully organized a “Smartphone Class for the Elderly” and “Anti-Scam Information Sharing Session”. This meaningful event was made possible with the joint efforts of Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited and YCCT. The event received an enthusiastic response, attracting over 20 elderly participants in a warm and engaging learning environment.
Smartphone Class: Bridging the Digital Gap
To help elderly individuals better adapt to the digital age, we specially arranged a smartphone training class led by volunteer instructors. The curriculum was designed to meet the daily needs of seniors and included:
- How to use basic functions (making calls, sending messages)
- Taking photos and using the photo album
- Using WhatsApp to stay connected with family and friends
- Searching for health information online
- Installing and using practical apps (e.g., weather, transportation, HA Go, eHealth, and other government services)
The instructors used simple and easy-to-understand teaching methods. With one-on-one assistance provided by volunteers, every participant was able to learn with confidence and gradually master smartphone skills.
Anti-Scam Information Sharing: Safeguarding the Elderly
With the rising number of telephone and online scams, elderly people have become frequent targets of fraud. Therefore, the second key part of the event was the “Anti-Scam Information Sharing Session”, where dedicated volunteers explained the latest scam tactics and how to respond effectively.
The session covered:
- Common telephone and internet scams (e.g., “Guess who I am?”, impersonating government officials, fake investment schemes)
- How to identify fake or suspicious messages
- What steps to take when receiving suspicious calls or texts
- Where to seek help and how to report scams
Through real-life examples and interactive Q&A, participants not only raised their awareness but also learned practical ways to protect their personal information and financial security.
Grateful for the Support – Working Together to Care for the Elderly
This event was made possible thanks to the strong support of our partnering organizations and the heartfelt dedication of our volunteers. They not only provided professional instruction and practical information but also accompanied the elderly with patience and care, making the learning experience enjoyable and fruitful.
Looking ahead, we will continue to organize more activities that enhance the quality of life and safety for the elderly, empowering them to enjoy their golden years with greater confidence and dignity.
